PSC608: General Description
Building on the knowledge and experience base developed in the preclinical curriculum, students move to various communities throughout Michigan to complete their clinical work.
Detailed objectives and measurement criteria are used at all teaching sites. The Psychiatry Clerkship is an eight-week clinical experience for College of Human Medicine
students and four weeks for College of Osteopathic Medicine students.
The excellent performance of CHM and COM students on the behavioral science components of board examinations speaks to the success of teaching efforts. The major focus of the clerkship experience is to develop skills in interviewing, diagnosis, and clinical judgment as well as acquire knowledge in the area of psychiatric disorders, all of which will train the physician to work with a variety of medical patients.
Students work in a variety of settings and are assigned patients who have been identified as having psychiatric problems as well as patients with other medical problems in which there is an emotional component. Through supervised work with patients, readings, seminars, clinical rounds and case study exercises, students develop the basic knowledge and skills necessary to complete the clerkship in psychiatry.
Elective Clerkships
Students with a strong interest in psychiatry may choose to do an elective in adult psychiatry (PSC 609) or child psychiatry (PSC 610). All electives are four weeks. To be eligible for an elective in psychiatry, students must first complete PSC 608. Students may do an elective on campus or off campus at an approved site. For an on-campus elective in any one of the following communities, the first step is to contact that community's administrator. For off-campus electives, contact your community administrator.
